Reducing CO2 emissions – one ship at a time

The main energy-saving devices from Becker Marine Systems include the Becker Mewis Duc and the Becker Twisted Fin®, two groundbreaking solutions that significantly contribute to increasing energy efficiency and to reducing power consumption and CO2 emissions. Independent model tests and CFD simulations demonstrate that the use of these energy-saving solutions can lead to significant fuel savings.

Reductions of up to 10% for tankers and bulk carriers and up to 4% for container ships are herewith realistic.

These significant efficiency improvements are crucial for complying with environmental and emission standards, especially in relation to the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII). The energy-saving devices have a direct contribution to improve the EEXI and the CII by an increase of the reference speed.

Therefore, the Becker Mewis Duct® and the Becker Twisted Fin® are cost-effective measures for promoting an even more sustainable shipping – applicable during newbuild or as retrofit.

Five reasons to choose a Becker Energy-Saving Device

  1. Relevant contribution to the fulfilment of EEXI and CII requirements – Becker Mewis Duct® and Becker Twisted Fin® as technological answers to the strategy of the IMO (International Maritime Organization).
  2. Improved propulsion – the ship's reference speed and thus the EEXI value are improved while maintaining the same propulsion power.
  3. Proven solution – since the introduction, more than 2,000 ships have already been equipped with Becker´s energy-saving devices.
  4. Significant fuel savings – on average, savings of up to 10% can be achieved for tankers and bulk carriers and even up to 4% for container ships.
  5. Practicality and economy – installation can be carried out during regular dry docks without the need for propeller removal.

Benefit from the synergy of Becker Rudders and Energy-Saving Devices

The integration of a Becker Rudder with either a Becker Mewis Duct® or Becker Twisted Fin® (the Becker Performance Package) represents the optimum of energy savings. Both products are meticulously harmonised using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations to ensure optimised manoeuvrability and propulsion efficiency.

This total performance improvement comprises two key aspects: the active part, which enhances the inflow towards the propeller and reduces losses and the passive part, aimed at minimising drag and enhancing course stability.

Becker Marine Systems continuously evaluates the most effective combinations of the Becker Mewis Duct®, Becker Twisted Fin®, and various rudder systems like the Becker Flap Rudder, Becker Twist Rudder or Becker Schilling® Rudder. This ongoing process ensures the best balance between manoeuvrability and efficiency. The Becker Performance Package is versatile, suitable for almost every hull design and practically every propeller type. This gives our customers the opportunity to implement a customised energy-saving solution, enabling them to meet specific ship speed requirements or achieve the desired energy savings for specific hull forms and propeller designs.

2. CFD simulations

Our experienced team of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) specialists develops customised energy saving devices tailored to the unique requirements of each specific hull-propeller configuration. Using advanced CFD methods and simulation techniques, we ensure that each system is optimised to the hydrodynamic characteristics of the respective vessel.

Test tank environment for model testing
3. Model tests

We conduct extensive tank tests for new ship buildings or upon special customer request for retrofits at well-established, independent research institutes to validate the performance of our energy-saving devices. If the results are positive, we start with the detailed design phase. However, if the results do not meet our promises, we allow our customers to withdraw from the contract to ensure highest reliability and customer satisfaction.

5. Production

Production takes place worldwide in specialised manufacturing facilities located close to the shipyards. Our reliable manufacturers work with the latest technologies and highly skilled labour. Each product is manufactured to the strictest quality standards to ensure optimum performance and durability. For each product a rigorous Factory Acceptance Test is carried-out by our quality management team to guarantee highest product quality.
