Two Awards for Becker Marine Systems at Ship Technology Excellence Awards 2025
Becker Marine Systems has been recognised with two prestigious honours at the 2025 Ship Technology Excellence Awards, underlining the company’s role as a driving force in sustainable and innovative maritime engineering. The Hamburg-based specialist received awards in the categories Innovation – Hydrodynamic Integration and Environmental – Wind Propulsion Efficiency.
The awards were presented for Becker Marine Systems’ Daggerboard, an innovative solution designed to complement modern wind propulsion technologies. By counteracting leeway and stabilising a vessel’s course, the Daggerboard ensures that ships can fully benefit from wind-assisted propulsion systems without compromising efficiency or manoeuvrability.
The technology represents a crucial link between above-deck wind propulsion systems and underwater hydrodynamics, addressing one of the key challenges in the practical application of wind-assisted shipping. When combined with Becker Marine Systems’ globally established Becker Mewis Duct®, the Daggerboard further strengthens the company’s contribution to reducing fuel consumption and emissions. To date, the Becker Mewis Duct® has helped save more than 22 million tonnes of CO₂, highlighting Becker’s long-term commitment to environmental responsibility.
Commenting on the recognition, Managing Director Henning Kuhlmann emphasised the importance of continuous innovation:
“If we want to maintain our position as technology leaders, we have to be flexible and open-minded. We like technology, we like engineering, we are specialists in hydrodynamics, but we cannot rest. If we remain open to change, stay curious and positive about technology, and occasionally take the risk of trying something new, we will stay ahead.”
Henning Kuhlmann also shared further insights into Becker Marine Systems’ innovation strategy and vision for sustainable shipping in an exclusive interview with Ship Technology.
The dual awards highlight Becker Marine Systems’ strong focus on research and development, its close cooperation with shipyards, operators, and industry partners, and its dedication to delivering forward-looking solutions that support greener shipping worldwide.
